High Roller Poker Tournaments

A high roller is a poker tournament with a buy-in well above the rest of the festival's schedule, usually several times the Main Event. A super high roller goes higher still. The fields are smaller and the prize pools are among the biggest of the series.

How a High Roller Works

The rules are those of any no-limit hold'em tournament, but the buy-in sets it apart. A higher entry fee brings a smaller field of experienced players and a prize pool that can match or pass the Main Event's with far fewer entries.

  • Structure: high rollers usually have a deep starting stack and longer levels, often over one or two days.
  • Entries: most allow re-entry while late registration is open, so the total entries are higher than the number of players.
  • Payouts: with a small field, only a few places are paid, and the top prizes are large.
  • Games: most high rollers are no-limit hold'em, but the big series also run Omaha and short deck high rollers.

How to Play a High Roller

  • Know the field: many players are professionals and regulars of the high roller circuit. Expect strong, aggressive play.
  • Manage your bankroll: a high roller is a big swing even for a winning player. Many players sell action or play only a few events per series.
  • Use satellites: some festivals run satellites into their high rollers, a cheaper way in.
