6-Max Poker Tournaments

A 6-max tournament seats at most six players per table instead of the usual eight or nine. With fewer players, the blinds come round faster and every player is involved in more hands.

How a 6-Max Works

The rules are those of a regular tournament; only the table size changes. The final table is usually six-handed too.

  • More action: the button comes round more often, so you pay the blinds and antes more often.
  • Wider ranges: with fewer opponents, hands that are folds at a full table become opens.

How to Play a 6-Max

  • Open more hands: especially from the cutoff and the button.
  • Defend your blinds: players attack them more often in short-handed play.
  • Be ready for aggression: re-raises and light three-bets are more common than at a full table.
